Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Festus Ovie Agas, has said that even as the engine room of the government, he cannot provide the number of political appointees in the state.
This followed posers by Deltans as to why there should be so many appointees in the government, despite the economic recession facing the country.
Agas, who stated this as he the kick-started a ministerial press briefing on Monday in Asaba, said that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has the constitutional backing to appoint as many aides as he wanted.
According to him, the SSG office so far carried out the obligations entrusted to the office with a view to ensuring effective and efficient realization of the goals and objectives of the state government
Agas said: “As SSG, my office integrated new political appointees into their new work environment by providing the necessary services to enable them settle down to their responsibilities.
“These appointees include Commissioners, Chief/Senior, Special Advisers, Executive Assistants, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, Chairmen and Members of Board and Parastatals as well as Governing Council of the Tertiary Institution etc.”
Agas explained that the SSG office played the vital role of assisting , guiding and moderating the activities the of government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies for the overall benefit of all residents.
While he described its office as the hub and threshing floor of government business, he noted that the office also co-ordinated the conversion of electioneering campaign promises to core administration programmes and turning political commitments into administrative objectives and goals.
Meanwhile, investigation revealed that Governor Okowa has so far appointed no fewer than 3,000 appointees in the state.
